Monitoring Your Listening Skills
Form small groups. Each member of your group is to attend the same lecture, listen to the same interview on a radio program or podcast, or view the same interview show on television (such as PBS NewsHour or one of the Sunday morning news shows) and take notes. Afterward, meet with the other members of the group to discuss what you have learned. Concentrate on the following questions:
What were the central points established in the lecture or interview?
Were the points made clearly, or did you have trouble understanding them?
What techniques might the speaker have used to improve his or her ability to convey the information?
Do you think your gender or culture affected how you listened to the lecture or interview? If so, how?
What suggestions can you make that might help you improve your listening skills?
