For a group to be effective, members eventually need to establish consensus so that everyone can work together to achieve the group’s objective. At the same time, groups must also avoid groupthink, which occurs when group members do not think critically about ideas merely in order to achieve consensus. Speak up if the following warning signs of groupthink occur:
Individuals disagree on issues, but avoid hashing them out in order to spare each other’s feelings.
Participants who disagree with the rest of the group feel pressured to conform.
Critical analysis of popular ideas is discouraged.
Members spend more time justifying choices than testing them.
