The central question of this unit has two parts: Is it clear and persuasive that the glorification of crime can lead to criminal behavior by those who are exposed to its influence? Does society have the right and the duty to regulate the culture that children or even adults might wish to consume?

  1. Lay out the arguments for and against the censorship of crime comics. Which arguments do you believe are most persuasive and why?
  2. Explore another period in history where the same sorts of arguments have been raised—for example, when movies first appeared at the turn of the nineteenth century, or today, when there has been sharp criticism of violent video games. What similarities and differences do you find in making this comparison?
