Additional Assignments

1. Google Books features a plethora of antebellum temperance tracts. Searching Google Books, locate one or two additional temperance works and compare/contrast them with the documents examined here. Do they conform to the strategies present here? Or do they offer new approaches to the temperance problem?
2. By the outbreak of the Civil War, drinking rates had declined significantly. Although we may know that people reduced their drinking, why they cut back is a tougher question. Of the strategies discussed in this unit, which do you think would have been most successful in changing people’s habits? Explain why.
