This unit introduces several posters produced during the period of U.S. involvement in the First World War (1917–1918). After analyzing the imagery and text presented on these posters, you will use the insights you glean to describe and explain American wartime culture. More specifically, you will discuss how visual representations of gender, nationalism, and patriotism influenced popular ideas about the expanding role of the United States in world affairs. Consider, too, what differences might exist between the messages the poster producers intended to convey and the ways that viewers received and understood those narratives. Through this activity, you will recognize that visual sources can be a valuable tool for historians while becoming aware of the limits of this type of primary source.
