In the following two essays, the writers take a stand on issues of importance to them. To help you begin to analyze the first reading, look at the notes in the margin. They identify features such as the thesis, or main idea, and the first of the points that support it in a paper that takes a stand.

As you read these essays, ask yourself the following questions:

  1. What stand does the writer take? Is it a popular opinion, or does it break from commonly accepted beliefs?
  2. How does the writer appeal to readers?
  3. How does the writer support his or her position? Is the evidence sufficient to gain your respect? Why or why not?
