For more on MLA format, see section A in the Quick Format Guide.
In her paper “Meet Me in the Middle: The Student, the State, and the School,” Candace Rardon investigates the rising costs of a college education and how schools have responded to the problem. Besides incorporating many features of effective research papers, this paper also illustrates the conventions for citing and listing sources in MLA style. The marginal annotations explain MLA formatting and citation guidelines, as well as point out effective research writing practices. No cover page is needed for an MLA paper. Because an outline was required by this student’s instructor, it precedes the paper shown here. Although this sample paper is presented for easy reading in a textbook, your paper should use the type style and size that MLA suggests: Times New Roman font, 12-point size. Set one-inch margins on all four sides, double-space all lines, and turn off automatic hyphenation. Use your software’s Help feature or visit the campus computer lab for assistance setting up this format for your file.
