Fertility rates in selected developed countries, 2008: This chart reveals just why declining fertility is a crucial concern in Western Europe, where fertility rates are now below the replacement level (2.1 children) in every country. Notice, also, that childbearing rates are especially low in the southernmost European nations, Russia, and several Asian countries.
