The relationship between grey matter (synaptogenesis) concentration in the cerebellum at 7 months of age and language comprehension at a child’s first birthday: This chart shows a close correlation between the quantity, or amount, of synaptogenesis that has taken place in this particular brain region and a child’s ability to understand language at age 1. The surprise is that this part of the brain—the cerebellum—does not qualify as a “higher brain center,” as it programs balance and coordination.
