Hurler disease. Formerly called gargoylism, Hurler disease is a mucopolysaccharidosis having symptoms that include wide nostrils, a depressed nasal bridge, thick lips and earlobes, and irregular teeth. In Hurler disease, glycosaminoglycans cannot be degraded. The excess of these molecules are stored in the soft tissue of the facial regions, resulting in the characteristic facial features.
