Chloroplasts (left) convert light energy into chemical energy. High-energy electrons in chloroplasts are transported through two photosystems (right). In this transit, which culminates in the generation of reducing power, ATP is synthesized in a manner analogous to mitochondrial ATP synthesis. In contrast with mitochondrial electron transport, however, electrons in chloroplasts are energized by light.
