Language Milestones in the First Two Years

Eager attempts to communicate are apparent in a baby’s first weeks and months. Infants babble at about 6 to 9 months, understand words and gestures by 10 months, and speak their first words at about 1 year. Deaf infants make their first signs even before a year. Click on each age or on the arrows to learn what language achievements happen during each age period.

How are deaf babies similar to babies with normal hearing when it comes to the sequence of language development? (Click the back button to review the table of language-development milestones before answering.)
Your answer should reference the age at which both groups of babies can comprehend simple words, as well as how they indicate that understanding.
