FIGURE 15.1 Let Bygones Be Bygones Young adults, depressed older adults, and emotionally healthy older adults played a computer game in which they could continue opening a series of boxes that they hoped would have money in them or risk finding a cartoon picture of the devil, which caused them to lose all their money and ended the game. Young adults and depressed older adults who discovered, at the end of a round, that they could have opened more boxes safely were more disappointed than were emotionally healthy, older adults. This was evident in their behaviour—they took more risks in subsequent rounds—and in increased activity in areas of the brain (the ventral striatal) that are activated when a person feels regret.
