Elements of the genre

Based on data that comes from satellite images, and from users adding information.

Precise. The map is accurate in its representations; for example, when you zoom in, you can see that Kriner’s Diner is on the corner of West Fireweed Lane and C Street in Anchorage, Alaska.

Clearly titled. The title says exactly what the map is/shows; conveniently it is also the title of the site (BurgerMap.org).

Clearly labeled streets and landscape features.

Orientation follows the convention of north at the top.

Uses symbols. For example, the highway name is presented in an oval.

Use of a legend/key. Because the mapmakers use conventional symbols and colors, they don’t provide a key. However, one interactive feature allows readers to show and highlight different locations on BurgerMap.

Style

The writing is brief, simple, and direct. E.g., Kriner’s Diner (and other burger vendors) are labeled, but for more information, users need to click on the name of the restaurant.

Design

Colors indicate specific things. For example, the system of icons is color coded, and indicates, for example, whether a burger joint has “fantastic fries” or beer or “vegetarian friendly fare.”
