Let's look at some key concepts in operant conditioning. We will focus first on the consequences that follow a behavior because they determine whether that behavior becomes more or less likely. If the consequence of a behavior is pleasant, we like it and we tend to want to repeat this behavior. Skinner called consequences that we wanted to repeat reinforcers. For example if a child gets money for cleaning her room, the expectation is that the child will be more likely to clean her room in the future. The consequence of money reinforces the child’s cleaning behavior.
