After trying all four of the possible combinations of target region and electrical current, research found a consistent pattern that is summarized in this table. Is this what you observed?
Lateral Hypothalamus | Ventromedial Hypothalamus | |
Destruction | Undereating | Overeating |
Stimulation | Overeating | Undereating |
It is tempting to conclude that the lateral hypothalamus is the “hunger center” of the brain. Destroying it leads the rat to starve, while stimulating it will cause a rat to begin eating even if the rat isn’t the least bit hungry. Likewise, we might conclude that the ventromedial hypothalamus is the "satiety center" of the brain. Destroying it leads to a rat that eats enormous quantities of food, while stimulating it causes a hungry rat to stop eating.
