Where would you fit in the identity-status model? James Marcia proposed that identity formation has two dimensions: exploration and commitment. A person’s scores on these two dimensions will place that person into one of four identity status categories, as shown in this table. The status that matches your scores on the questionnaire is highlighted.
Low Commitment | High Commitment | |
---|---|---|
Low Exploration |
Diffusion is the relative absence of exploration and commitment. Diffused individuals are often apathetic and uninterested, and lack direction. |
Foreclosure represents a commitment formed without substantial prior exploration. This commitment often flows from the expectations of parents or other significant figures in the individual's life. |
High Exploration |
Moratorium is the state of active exploration without much commitment. In developmental terms, it usually precedes identity achievement. |
Identity achievement represents high levels of both exploration and commitment. It is the state of having committed to specific identity elements following a period of exploration. |
