Chapter 1. How online dating is affecting society

This video discusses the launch of the first major online dating site, Match.com and its effect on relationships. Online dating was previously considered taboo, but is now much more common and there are hundreds of online dating sites and apps. Whitney Wolfe is considered the 21st century cupid as she is the co-founder of two very well-known dating apps. Currently, over 295 million users have used online dating services around the world. This is an international phenomenon as approximately 12.5% residents in the Netherlands report that they date online, as well as 12.4% in South Korea. As a society, we were previously limited to face to face social network, but online dating has enabled people to meet potential partners from around the world. MIT researchers have conducted studies that suggest online dating sites and applications have led to more interracial marriages and provided a venue for homosexual men and women to find relationships. However, online dating does come with risks, such as meeting total strangers and users creating fake profiles. It is anticipated that the number of users will consistently rise.
