ACTIVITIES
Analyzing Your Online Face
Look at one of your online profiles for a social media site—Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, Google+. (If you don’t have one, use the profile of a family member or friend.) Working with a classmate, use the three Ps of mediated communication—powerful, public, and permanent—to evaluate each other’s online face. What face do you perceive your partner to have? Is it accurate? Based on what your partner perceived, how can you improve your own online face?
Flaming and Trolling in Action
Look at the discussion thread in the comment section of a recent online news article about a controversial topic (e.g., www.washingtonpost.com or www.nytimes.com). Identify any instances of flaming, trolling, or harassment and analyze how other commenters responded to these posts. Work with a small group of classmates to prepare a group report on how these comments worked with or violated the guidelines for mediated communication competence suggested in this chapter. Present the report in class.
