Competition, hostility, and prejudice The nation of Italy is, relatively speaking, a racially tolerant country; surveys indicate that its citizens’ views about racial and ethnic diversity are similar to those of many other European nations (Berggren & Nilsson, 2012). Yet it recently was the scene of a shocking act of hostile prejudice. During a soccer game, Black players from the team AC Milan were subjected to racial abuse by fans of the opposing team. AC Milan player Kevin Prince Boateng took a stand—he walked off the field in protest. His teammates joined him, and the game was stopped. The abuse occurred in exactly the type of situation that psychologist Gordon Allport identified as one that triggers prejudice: an interaction in which members of a different racial or ethnic group are rivals, in competition with one another.
