Look familiar? In his neo-Freudian theory of personality, Carl Jung suggested that humans possess a collective unconscious which contains images that are inherited and thus exist in the same manner in the minds of all humans. A prediction of Jung’s theory is that some symbols would appear in stories and myths repeatedly—because all creators of these stories and myths have the same symbols in their collective unconscious. Shown are three examples of a “wise old man” symbol posited by Jung: Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings movies, Dumbledore from Harry Potter, and Obi Wan Kenobi from Star Wars.
