The nations of the world differ in gender equality, that is, the degree to which men and women are equal in financial and social power. Contrary to the predictions of evolutionary psychology, preferences in mate selection vary in countries with varying degrees of gender equality. An example of such a country is the Netherlands, which leads the world in gender equality according to a United Nations survey (United Nations Development Programme, 2012). Illustrating this equality is Pauline van der Meer Mohr, a former senior executive in banking and now president of the Executive Board of Erasmus University Rotterdam, in the Netherlands.
