To find out, researchers studied autobiographical memory among two groups of children: European American children and children in China. They conducted their study with preschoolers, kindergarteners, and second graders. American children were found to have more specific memories of events from their lives than were Chinese children. The cultural difference reflects the distinct individualistic and collectivistic cultures in which American and Chinese children, respectively, are raised (Wang, 2004).
