There are two forms of video interviews. Synchronous video interviews are done in real time, using Skype or other videoconferencing systems. In asynchronous video interviews, applicants record answers to questions provided to them in advance. The recorded video is then uploaded to a secure Web site, where employers can quickly view a number of applicants and determine whom to interview further. Organizations commonly use this tactic to reduce the cost and time of handling initial interviews (Kiger, 2010).
With synchronous and asynchronous video interviews, following certain steps will help you competently conduct or participate in the conversation. First, make sure you know how to use whatever equipment is involved. Take time to learn how the camera operates and how to use the related videoconferencing software. Second, test the equipment in the actual setting where you’ll be conducting or recording the interview.
