After you identify a possible topic, ask yourself whether the topic could serve as the basis for a successful speech. The answer could be yes if you find the topic personally or socially important. You want to be interested in and challenged by the topic, since you’ll be spending considerable time preparing your speech. You’ll also want to consider whether you could complete your speech in the time allotted. For a classroom speech, check whether your topic is acceptable. Your instructor might veto your proposed topic if it’s been overdone or is inappropriate (such as gun control, abortion, or the legalization of marijuana).
Finally, think about whether you will be able to find quality information about your topic. Later in the chapter we cover how to research your topic, but it’s important to think now about whether you’ll be able to locate and use sources on your topic. If you have any doubts, check with a librarian or your instructor.
