Communicating for Your Career More and more, employers are searching for candidates with strong communication skills. Write down at least five job industries (journalism, sales, law, etc.) and brainstorm how communication skills are necessary for jobs in that area. What role does each type of communication (interpersonal, small group, public, and mediated) have in that industry? In which of these types do you think you have the strongest skills? Looking at your list, which industry matches your current communication strength?
Creating Your Own SXSW As discussed in the opening to this chapter, SXSW brings together people in a variety of industries, including music, film, media, and technology. In a small group, brainstorm another festival that would bring people in diverse areas together. What are the goals of this festival? What ideas would you want to be communicated? Once you have your core ideas, consider some of the obstacles Louis Black faced. How would you persuade community leaders and corporate sponsors to support your festival?
