Reflecting on Multitasking As you’ve learned, multitasking can lead to negative outcomes. For one week, keep a journal of the various instances in which you caught yourself multitasking when you should have been a more active listener. Did you write an e-mail to your professor while you were on the phone with your parents? Did you text your roommate while you were supposed to be listening to a TED talk for class? Did you check your Instagram feed while your friend was telling you about his bad day? Why do you think you engaged in multitasking rather than actively listening? Boredom? Efficiency? How do you think your interactions were impacted because of this?
Listening in the Workplace As the chapter opener discusses, listening skills are very important in the military. Make a list of ten other jobs where you think the ability to listen is essential. Then, reread p. 175 on the different styles of listening (people-oriented, content-oriented, action-oriented, and time-oriented) and write down what you think would be the most common style found in this job. Finally, give an example of a situation of how this style would be used. Based on the jobs and styles of listening you recorded, do you think you are suited for any of these jobs?
