Washington Crossing the Delaware

Emanuel Leutze

Painted in 1851 by Emanuel Leutze, a German American, this painting commemorates Washington’s crossing of the Delaware River in December 1776, part of a surprise attack on the Hessian forces at Trenton, New Jersey. The original painting was part of the collection in a museum in Germany and was destroyed during an air raid in 1942. A replica hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
