Western Defense Command
During the spring of 1942, 108 evacuation orders directed the removal of Japanese Americans in California, Washington, Oregon, and parts of Arizona. These were issued under the name of General John L. DeWitt, head of the Western Defense Command. Some of these notices appeared in newspapers, but most were posted in high-visibility places, such as on billboards and community buildings. Families were given one week to prepare. The two-step process began with the affected Japanese being transported to one of sixteen “assembly centers” near their homes and then sent to one of ten “relocation centers.” The following evacuation order was issued in San Francisco on May 7, 1942.
