I Am an American

Dorothea Lange

Dorothea Lange (1895–1965) was a famous documentary-style photographer, known for her work with the Farm Security Administration during the Depression era. This photograph was taken in March 1942. The owner of the store, a Japanese American and graduate of the University of California, placed the sign in his window the day after the bombing of Pearl Harbor; he was later sent to one of the relocation camps.
