William Henry Johnson

William Henry Johnson (1901–1970) was an African American painter who was born in South Carolina and moved to New York when he was seventeen. He studied in New York and on Cape Cod before moving to France in 1926 to study art. Returning to the United States in 1946, Johnson was assigned by the Works Progress Administration to teach at the Harlem Community Art Center.
