Julia Alvarez was born in New York in 1950 but raised in the Dominican Republic until she was ten. She has published poetry, fiction, memoir, and children’s books, including her best-selling first novel, the autobiographical How the García Girls Lost Their Accents (1991). The following story, “Snow,” is a chapter taken from that book.
