each trial will follow the same basic pattern: DONE - 1. To start the experiment: DONE - a. The words ÒPress the space bar to begin the experiment.Ó will appear on the screen DONE - b. When the space bar is hit, the following events happen: DONE - 2. At the beginning of a trial, the fixation mark (+) will be shown at the center of the screen. This mark should be centered on the screen and stay on for 0.75 seconds. DONE - 3. There should be a brief blank period for 0.25 seconds. DONE - 4. Then a random string of 20 letters should be displayed one at a time. DONE - A. The letters will be presented for 75 ms each. DONE - B. The letters should be in all CAPS, size 36 font, and sans serif. DONE - C. No letter is repeated in the sequence. DONE - D. There are two target letters: J and K. DONE - i. There is at least one target in every sequence (of 20). DONE - ii. Both are possible. When both are presented, the J and K can occur in either order. DONE - iii. The presence of a target does not make the list longer. DONE - iv. The first target cannot be earlier than the 4th letter of the sequence, and if two targets are present, the first target cannot be later than the 9th position. DONE - v.The trials with a single target (Òcatch trialÓ) will not be used in our data analysis, but need to be captured. They are in the experiment to just keep the responder honest so they donÕt know what is coming and do not just type J and K each time. DONE - 5. Each condition is to be presented 10 times in a random order. Thus, each level of the IV plus the single letter Òcatch trialÓ to keep the participants honest: DONE - 1. Condition 1: Separation 0 (two targets are right next to each other in the list). DONE - 2. Condition 2: Separation 1 (one letter between the targets) DONE - 3. Condition 3. Separation 2 (two letters between the targets) DONE - 4. Condition 4. Separation 4 (four letters between the targets) DONE - 5. Condition 5. Separation 6 (six letters between the targets) DONE - 6. Condition 6. Separation 8 (eight letters between the targets) DONE - 7. Catch Trials: only one target will be shown. (There will be 50 of these trials.) DONE - 6. After the string of 20 is done, there is a blank screen. Then, this message appears on the screen: Type the targets you saw in this trial. DONE - 7. Participants will use the keyboard to type the targets. Only the target keys, delete key, R key, and Enter will work. We can use a response box as in the Partial Report experiment. DONE - 8. When they type a target letter, it will be shown at the bottom of the screen in a 48 point font. The target letter can only be entered once; they canÕt type JJ or KK. DONE - 9. When they press space bar, they go to the next trial. DONE - 10. There will be a 1 second break before the next trial. DONE - 11. Repeat steps 2-9 until all 110 trials are complete.
