DONE - 1. To start the experiment: DONE - A. The words ÒPress the space bar to begin the experiment.Ó will appear on the screen. DONE - B. When the space bar is hit, the following events happen: DONE- 2. A pair of names of animals will appear on the screen. One of the names is always either elephant or fly. The other should be randomly selected from the ÒanimalÓ column in the provided list. The names will remain on the screen for 5 seconds. DONE - 3. The names then disappear and a property of the target animal (the one that is neither an elephant nor a fly) is heard. (All properties have been provided as MP3s.) DONE - 4. The participant reacts by pressing the F or J key, designating that the property does or does not exist on the target animal (e.g., wings for a tiger or for a flamingo). This should be counterbalanced so that for half of the participants, pressing the F designates a True response and for half, a False response. The same is true for the J key. DONE - 5. Once a response is made, the next set of two animals (1st Ð elephant or fly; 2nd randomly selected from the list) appears on the screen and the sequence of events repeats (steps 2-5) until all 40 trials are complete. STOP - 6. Correct or incorrect properties should be counterbalanced across participants (in other words, if the target animal is parrot, half the time ÒbeakÓ should be the property and the other half of the time ÒpalmÓ should be used).
