Conversion Disorder
Conversion disorder is a somatic disorder characterized by physical symptoms that affect voluntary motor movement and sensory functioning. Although there is an identified physical symptom (e.g., paralysis, blindness), the symptoms are not consistent with a known medical cause or disorder. Many individuals with conversion disorder present with symptoms similar to those caused by neurological disorders (e.g., numbness, loss of feelings, paralysis, blindness). Many physicians, however, have difficulty determining whether the individual has a genuine health concern or is exhibiting conversion symptoms. More often than not, there is a psychological basis for an individual’s conversion symptoms, thus knowledge of conversion disorder is important to both mental health and primary care professionals, since both will be introduced to individuals with such symptoms.

One possible answer might be that conversion disorders share very similar symptoms with many medical diagnoses. It may mimic symptoms in a slightly different way from a known medical condition, but there is no known medical cause for the symptoms. A traumatic or stressful incident can usually be identified prior to the onset of conversion symptoms.
