The Importance of Multicultural Treatment Modalities

The sociocultural model of abnormality highlights the importance of taking into account one’s immediate environment, culture, and beliefs. Only recently has there been a surge in focus on multicultural or culturally sensitive treatment approaches. Unfortunately, many studies have found that members of ethnic and racial minority groups are less likely to show improvement and are more likely to account for the larger attrition rates in clinical treatment (De Luca et al., 2016; Cook et al., 2014). Inclusion of sensitive and distinctive issues that those in minority groups face is key to the development and success of a multicultural therapy.

What are some ways in which multicultural education and training can assist a therapist in working with diverse populations?

Discuss the importance of being able to modify existing evidence-based psychotherapy practices in order to be culturally sensitive.
Two possible answers are (1) that such modification allows the therapist and client to process the client’s normalization of a given experience that may otherwise be considered “abnormal,” and (2) that modifying treatment specific to a client’s needs provides an opportunity to validate the importance of the client’s unique cultural background.
