Recovering from Dementia

Dementia, as described in Chapter 15, is considered a neurocognitive disorder by the DSM-5 (APA, 2013). In previous years the word dementia was considered synonymous with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Dementia is a facet of AD, but AD is not the only type of dementia. Family members usually regard dementia as untreatable and believe that their loved one will never recover from it. The following case illustrates that each individual is unique and deserves a comprehensive evaluation to determine his or her level of functioning and prognosis. It also brings up the important issue of how many medications mimic dementia-like symptoms in older individuals.
