Practical Use of the Cognitive and Behavioral Models
Aaron Beck, a psychiatrist by training, has pioneered the development of cognitive therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy. A great deal of research has been conducted by a variety of clinical researchers to support the efficacy and effectiveness of cognitive therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy for a multitude of mental health issues and diagnoses (e.g., depression and anxiety; Beck & Weishaar, 2014). As stated in Chapter 3, cognitive therapy attempts to assist clients in recognizing negative thoughts, cognitive distortions, and errors in interpretation, while developing the skills to challenge their dysfunctional and automatic thoughts and beliefs in order to reduce distressing psychological symptoms. The cognitive-behavioral approach uses both facets of the cognitive model and the behavioral model to assess and treat both unhealthy and irrational distortions in thought and unhealthy behaviors that may be unconsciously reinforced.
