This lithograph depicts Saint Vitus’ Dance, a widespread form of mass psychogenic illness during the Middle Ages, characterized by rapid, uncoordinated, jerking movements of the face, feet, and hands. Similar symptoms were on display in Le Roy, New York, in 2011, during an outbreak of mass psychogenic illness attributed to the impact of social media.
