The Daily Grind

Remembered events appear regularly in newspaper columns and blog posts and even in cartoons and graphic memoirs. The cartoon reproduced here, called “The Daily Grind” by illustrator Kelsey C. Roy, neatly conveys the basic features of the genre: It tells a compelling story, vividly describes the writer’s younger self and her mother through simple but evocative drawings, and clearly conveys the autobiographical significance in their mother-daughter ritual of visiting a coffee shop. The cartoon also deftly captures nostalgia for past events and explores how personal moments can lead us to place importance on everyday objects (like muffins).
