Effective documents follow an organizing pattern, often the same one that the document as a whole follows, such as chronology, description, or costs/benefits (see Chapter 15). These common patterns help readers anticipate what you’ll say. Readers who recognize a pattern, such as process explanation, will find it easier to focus on your ideas and argument if they understand how you are organizing your paragraph.
