Some writers might be surprised to see the terms design and academic essay used in the same sentence. They’re aware, of course, that they should use wide margins, readable fonts, and double-spaced lines, and they generally understand that they should do this to help readers — typically an instructor — read and respond to their work. Beyond these elements, however, they think of design as having little or no role in their essays.
They’re wrong. Thoughtful design can help you achieve your goals, address your readers’ expectations, and adapt to the context in which your essay will be written and read.
