You risk damaging your credibility if you provide inaccurate information in your document. To reduce this risk, do the following:
Check your facts and figures. Your readers might think that you’re deliberately misleading them if you fail to provide accurate information. As you edit, return to your original sources or your notes to check any facts and figures.
Check every quotation. Return to your original sources or consult your notes to ensure that you have quoted each source exactly. Make sure that you have noted any changes to a quotation with ellipses or brackets and that those changes haven’t altered the original meaning of the passage. Be sure to cite each source both in the text and in a works cited or references list (see Chapters 21 and 22).
Check the spelling of every name. Don’t rely on electronic spelling checkers, which provide the correct spelling for only the most common or prominent names.
