Give Every Word a Job to Do

Writing in a detailed, specific way might seem like a recipe for going on and on. In a first draft, it’s fine to write without censoring yourself. As you edit, however, look for words and phrases that aren’t carrying their weight, and cut or change them. When you see a bland phrase, consider whether you might change it to something livelier. When you see a long-winded phrase, think about how you might say it more concisely. Using a thesaurus to look up words you’ve written but don’t like can often provide inspiration — as long as you understand and feel comfortable with the word’s shades of meaning.
