This option works well if the two clauses are long. If they are relatively short, as in the following example, the result can sound choppy and disjointed:
The band has just three other members. They play different instruments on different tracks.
Sometimes, however, two sentences are the best option to fix a run-on or comma splice that is lengthy or complex.
The band has just three other members — Steve, Buzz, and Eliot — and they play different instruments on different tracks.
The band has just three other members — Steve, Buzz, and Eliot. They play different instruments on different tracks.
