Commas separate parts of a sentence. Sometimes they help make clear the structure of the sentence, and sometimes they give other clues about what you mean. A joke that turns up on T-shirts and coffee mugs illustrates this point. It goes like this:

Let’s eat Grandma.

Let’s eat, Grandma.

Commas save lives!
