Rhetorical Analyses

Rhetorical analyses take numerous forms, from articles and essays to blogs, Web pages, and — as in the case of Brooke Gladstone’s graphic analysis — comics. Rhetorical analyses typically address factors such as the writer’s purpose and background, the nature of the audience involved in a particular communication situation, the context in which a particular communication act took place, or the source of the information used in a particular exchange. Writers of rhetorical analyses often draw on sources of information that reflect the knowledge and interests of their intended readers. A rhetorical analysis written for a scholarly journal in political science, for example, might rely more heavily on scholarly articles and books than would an analysis directed to a general audience, which might rely more heavily on observation, interviews, and references to news articles or broadcasts.
