Language Milestones in the First Two Years
Eager attempts to communicate are apparent in a baby’s first weeks and months. Infants babble at about 6 to 9 months, understand words and gestures by 10 months, and speak their first words at about 1 year. Deaf infants make their first signs even before a year. Click on each age or on the arrows to learn what language achievements happen during each age period.
