Because of the brain’s contralateral organization, the right side of the brain processes functions for the left side of the body, and vice versa. Touch, temperature, pressure, and pain sensations for different areas of the body occur at distinct locations on the parietal lobe’s somatosensory cortex. Similarly, the initiation of movement for different parts of the body occurs at distinct locations on the frontal lobe’s primary motor cortex. If body parts were proportional to their representation on the somatosensory cortex and primary motor cortex, they would look like the misshapen human figures on the outer edges of the drawings.
