Karl Wernicke (1848–1905): Evidence for the Localization of Language Comprehension Psychiatrist and neurologist Karl Wernicke was only 26 when he published his findings on a type of aphasia that differed from that identified by Pierre Paul Broca. Wernicke’s patients were unable to comprehend written or spoken language, although they could produce speech.
